(Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.)
Incumbents in this position perform, plan and supervise the maintenance and repair of airport runways, roads, ramps, taxiways and grounds through subordinate airfield maintenance personnel. Work involves shift, weekend and holiday assignments; therefore, candidates must be available for overtime, mandatory 24-hour snow call and shift work.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
● Provides first line supervision during routine work conditions and during emergency and snow operations.
● Manages and directs staff consisting of Airfield Maintenance Workers and Leads:
○ Plans, organizes, assigns and directs the work activities of subordinate staff to realize the work goals and to ensure the compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) technical policies, procedures and guidelines on all work performed on the Aircraft Operating Area (AOA).
○ Identifies work-related problems and formulates viable solutions.
○ Supports and engages in positive and effective communication with both internal and external customers.
○ Prepares annual service ratings, evaluates performance of subordinate employees and provides support and coaching to develop employees.
○ Identifies work-related problems and handles/resolves department grievances at the first step.
○ Provides documentation to support corrective and disciplinary actions.
○ Participates in the hiring process.
○ Ensures personnel are well-trained in all aspects of department’s operations.
● Advises and provides interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
● Operates, maneuvers and/or provides simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools, such as motor vehicles, trucks, snow removal equipment, back hoes, loaders, pavement saws, paint stripers, mowing equipment, sweepers and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
● Operates equipment, such as construction equipment (backhoe, crane, blaster stripper, etc), trucks ranked 21,000 GVW and up, mowers, sweepers, and miscellaneous equipment that is used at the Airport.
● Utilizes a variety of advisory data and information, such as checklists, blueprints, field condition reports, safety reports, work orders, vehicle maintenance/repair records, supply inventories, job applications, performance evaluations, personnel policies, equipment maintenance and operating manuals, FAA manuals, safety manuals, materials safety data sheets, procedures and guidelines.
● Plans and lays out jobs.
● Orders supplies, equipment and materials.
● Initiates and completes work orders using existing Airport systems (CityWorks).
● Inspects and schedules equipment maintenance and/or repairs with Airport Fleet Maintenance in accordance with current procedures.
● Participates in long-range project planning for airfield maintenance and airfield construction projects.
● Arranges special field security measures such as fencing for special reception of VIPs.
● Checks field security for FAA and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulatory compliance.
● Acts in place of Airfield Maintenance Supervisor in the absence of superior personnel.

● Exercises good independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria to approach and resolve problems.
● Recognizes and identifies similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes and colors to clearly distinguish airfield markings and signage and the ability to communicate their meaning with others.
● Some tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, snow and/or ice, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife and toxic/poisonous agents
● Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
● Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide first line supervision. Ability to persuade, convince, and train subordinate supervisory personnel and field maintenance workers. Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
● Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicles, trucks, snow removal equipment, back hoes, loaders, pavement saws, paint stripers, mowing equipment, sweepers and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

● Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentage and decimals.
● Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as supervision, managing, leading, teaching, planning and coordinating. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
● Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
● Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife and toxic/poisonous agents.
● Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to fifty pounds and push and pull objects weighing over one hundred pounds to demonstrate work methods or assist with maintenance duties. Requires the ability to stoop, bend, twist and climb while inspecting and assisting with airfield maintenance/construction work.
● Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes to clearly distinguish objects and sounds to communicate with others.
Other Requirements:
● Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
● A ten year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
