Job Description

Involves assessing organizational and strategic issues and providing guidance through organizational development solutions such as facilitating assessments, strategic planning, and culture-change and process-oriented approaches to enhance institutional performance. Consults with leaders, departments, and committees to address root causes of organizational effectiveness issues using a systematic approach. Analyzes current organizational purpose, structure, relationships, policies, systems, and data. Recommends and facilitates improvements ensuring alignment with organizational strategy.


Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues / problems without precedent and / or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.


The Perioperative Business Advisor serves as a key resource for driving data-informed decision-making, applying and spreading continuous process improvement methodology, and supporting enterprise-level strategic planning across Perioperative Services. As an ambassador of the Perioperative Services Operations team, the Perioperative Business Advisor will support Perioperative Site Triads by acquiring and processing data required to engineer optimal solutions to operational issues, and they will lead projects of critical importance to the organization. They will partner with multidisciplinary teams, including Peripoperative Triad leaders, Central Scheduling, Information Technology, Enterprise Information Analytics, and frontline clinical staff to bring systems and information together to drive this data focus. They will direct initiatives aimed at optimizing Operating Room resource utilization, growing surgical capacity, improving operational efficiency, elevating staff and faculty experience, and enhancing patient quality and safety. They will partner with service line, clinic, and surgeon leaders to maximize utilization of allocated operating room time. The Perioperative Business Advisor will ensure that all surgical and perianesthesia units across the enterprise are held accountable to consistent systemwide standards for operations set by the Perioperative leadership team and Surgical Executive Committee, and will act as financial stewards of the division. Where appropriate, they will support improvement activities that transcend quality, clinical, and operational dimensions to support the achievement of the organizational True North goals and along value streams of strategic importance to the organization. In concert with site triad leaders, the Perioperative Business Advisor will assess and identify problems and opportunities, convene teams of subject matter experts, establish and track KPIs, coordinate the activities of the improvement team, identify appropriate resources needed, and develop a schedule to ensure timely completion of improvement projects. Must have competency in project management, process improvement (Lean or Six Sigma), developing standard work, facilitating multidisciplinary teams, and in-depth knowledge of perioperative workflows and operations.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $138,100 - $207,200 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Five (5) years’ experience in a health care setting or in a lean role or a combination. With at least one year of experience in a dedicated role leading teams either on improvement projects or in operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of the organizational development and effectiveness field, theories, models to assess, design and implement customized organizational interventions.
  • Demonstrates superior analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills.
  • Knowledge of the organizational environment of complex, matrixed academic health systems to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.
  • Have superior written, verbal and presentation skills for influencing and facilitating sustained change.
  • Possesses superior consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates superior strategic-thinking and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
  • Ability to facilitate and influence people at all levels. Ability to persuade through both logic and appeal to positive motivations. Ability to handle multiple constituencies, agendas, engagements and tasks, and to deal productively with ambiguity and conflict.
  • Demonstrates ability to learn quickly, reason, synthesize and generalize based on information obtained; sound judgment; ability to draw unbiased conclusions.
  • Knowledge of the consulting process to effectively lead highly significant engagements from inception to conclusion.
