Under general supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) in the Feed Inspection Program, the Environmental Scientist will sample and analyze results of commercial feed and livestock drugs. The incumbent will independently conduct environmental impact studies related to feed and food safety, take regulatory actions, conduct investigations and inspections, and other duties related to the enforcement of California laws governing the distribution of feed and livestock drugs. The incumbent will review, study and analyze changes to medicated feed, medically important antimicrobial drugs used in animal feed, veterinary feed directives (VFD) and livestock drugs. The incumbent will interpret and apply scientific data, methods, and principles relating to medicated feed, VFD, medically important antimicrobial drugs used in animal feed, and livestock drugs; make presentations at meetings and workshops; work with industry to obtain compliance with CDFA laws and regulations, specifically antimicrobial drug use and stewardship laws and regulations, and the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

The duties of this position are performed approximately 75% outdoors and 25% indoors. The primary workstation will be the incumbent’s home office, which is equipped with a desk, chair, computer with various software programs, and a multifunction print/scan/copy machine. The employee’s alternate workstation is located indoors at 2399 Gateway Oaks Drive, Sacramento, CA, 95833. When in the office, the duties of this position are performed indoors in a cubicle environment. Each cubicle contains a chair, computer monitor, docking station, printer, a telephone with voicemail, portable and stationary filing drawers, and overhead cabinets.
Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA’s Telework Policy.
During activities while in the field, the employee may be exposed to gases, dirt, odors, noise, fumes, uneven surfaces, extreme weather conditions, and fast-moving equipment. Trucks, railcars, ships and other conveyances of feed and fertilizing materials are sampled outdoors during loading at the manufacturing locations, while in transit, or upon delivery at the plant, farm, or livestock operation. The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds, which is required when unstacking and re-stacking bags of feed.
Travel by state vehicle within assigned area is required on a routine basis. Travel by car, air, or other public transportation system to attend in-state and out-of-state meetings, follow up with field staff, local, state and federal agencies, and advisory board/subcommittee meetings will occasionally be required. Overnight stays or travel in severe weather may be occasionally required.
